Derrick Quach

I build software from the memory layer up — virtual memory managers, file systems, and search engines, through to full‑stack apps people actually use. UC Irvine, Computer Science.

0x01 — about

Curious about how things work, all the way down.

Derrick graduated from UC Irvine with a B.S. in Information and Computer Sciences. His work spans two ends of the stack: low-level systems — a virtual memory manager with segmentation and paging, a file system built on emulated I/O — and applied, people-facing software, from a VR research tool used to study the hippocampus to a full e‑commerce platform with a load‑balanced backend.

0x02 — experience

Where he's worked.

Research Assistant — Stark Laboratory, Irvine, CA

  • Built multiple virtual mazes in Unity to study functional changes to the hippocampus following exploration of a virtual 3D environment.
  • Took part in code reviews with graduate students, working through changing requirements and design patterns.
  • Serialized collected data with JSON and automated analysis across large datasets.
  • Coordinated an external research study, recruiting 20+ participants through UCI Sona Systems.

Software Developer — Calit2@UCI, Irvine, CA

  • Developed a virtual board game in Unity to raise awareness about the complications of Type I Diabetes Mellitus in young children.
  • Applied component-based design to speed up game development in Unity.
  • Used ScriptableObjects to keep game state in sync across separate objects and components.

CS Lab Tutor — Irvine, CA

  • Led lab sections for roughly 35 students learning intermediate Python.
  • Wrote exercises and guides covering object‑oriented design, library modules, Big‑O analysis, and class protocols for iterators, operator overloading, and inheritance.

0x03 — projects

Things he's built.

Virtual Memory Manager

Nov 2017

Java

  • Designed and built a virtual memory system using segmentation and paging.
  • Used a translation look‑aside buffer to speed up virtual address translation.

File System

Oct 2017

Java

  • Built a simple file system on top of an emulated I/O layer.
  • Used bitmapping and file descriptors to organize storage, with an open file table for reads and writes.

Web Crawler & Search Engine

Mar – Jun 2017

Python

  • Extended a partial crawler with link extraction and a bad‑link detection algorithm.
  • Built a search engine supporting indexing, retrieval, and page ranking.
  • Used NLTK for tokenization, stemming, and stop‑word removal, ranking pages by TF‑IDF.
